The Trakehner Influence in Northrhine-Westfalia

The new millenium - Saint Tropez, Münchhausen and Co.

Today, the list of approved Trakehner for the Northrhine-Westfalen warmblood breeds is very long. But it was the acquisition of the bay stallion Saint Tropez in 1995 that stirred the news. He was the first Trakehner state stud stallion after 25 years of Trakehner "abstinence" in Warendorf. His story is somewhat tragic, since he failed the 100 day test for the Trakehners, but remained approved in Westfalia. Since the state stud had no interest of giving him another chance, this was the end of his Trakehner career, despite two outstanding foal crops on the ground. One's loss is one's gain, and so today, Saint Tropez enjoys popularity in Westfalia, and regarding his offspring's performance winnings, is in the top ten of dressage sires in Warendorf. Saint Tropez was approved in Neumünster in 1995 as a premium stallion and is by Tolstoi out of Schwarzach by Herzbube. His first foal crop in Westfalia produced the chestnut approval champion Saint Georg, and only a year later, a full brother to Saint Georg was sold at the Westfalen Elite auction for $200,000. Not a bad start for an underdog...

Saint Tropez

Interestingly, a close relative to Saint Tropez is now among the newly stationed stallions in Warendorf: Fuerto, son of Farewell I and out of the full Trakehner mare Courage II by Tolstoi-Santiago, was a premium stallion in Münster in 2005, and already has a full brother in Sweden, who was approved in Germany too, and then became the Swedish stallion performance test winner of his crop. The match seems to be working!

And another success story is the grey Mein Märchenprinz: a son of the Grand Prix dressage winner EH Münchhausen TSF and out of a Westfalian Popcorn (Pilot) daughter, he was approved, won the Westfalenwappen, the state's biggest young horse championship, and was an auction highlight in Münster-Handorf.

Mein Märchenprinz

The Rhineland and Westfalia continue to utilize Trakehner foundation lines in order to enhance refinement, rideability and soundness in their breeds. Since both registries accept pretty much every performance tested stallion for registratzion of their foals, the list of Trakehner stallions in these breeds is very long. We want to close with two stallions: one is a younger dressage star, who - we think - proves to be the perfect mix of today's popular bloodlines with the performance heritage of old Trakehner blood: FS Sandro Classic won the Bundeschampionat with Jana Freund for Ferienhof Stücker, a Rhineland-based breeding farm, and embodies the pferct symbiosis of these breeds. He was sired by Sandro Hit, and his dam Scarlett is a daughter of Gottfried Hoogen's versatile stamping sire Sir Chamberlain, a Trakehner son of Sir Shostakovich xx. And the other, Lebenskünster, is by the Holsteiner Lancer II who was stationed at Vogelsangshof, and out of Pianola by Pasternak-Hartung/Trak, combining the great names of Vogelsangshof and his Rhineland brand with a station that for over 150 years has bred warmbloods in Westfalia: Warendorf!
