International Trakehner Stallion Market Neumünster 2009

The National Mare Championships

Traditionally, the Trakehner Verband selects a National Champion Mare each year at Neumünster. All regional 3yr old Champions, Reserve Champions, Best Anglo Trakehners and "Best of Show" from the summer are invited, and in 2009, 11 mares showed up for the final selection. Unfortunately, two of the best mares of 2009, Rhineland's Champion Elba and Lower Saxony's Reserve Champion Honeybey were both out of commission. They had previously been selected for the mare auction, which also siffered from their absence.

The 2009 Champion mare was the Champion from the New States/North inspection, dark bay St.Pr.+Pr.St. Gänseblümchen. Her inspection scores in the summer were 8.5,7.5,7/7.5,9.5,8/8.5 for a total of 56.5 points. Gänseblümchen is a very elegant mare with a good frame, correct foundation and outstanding breed and gender type. Her movement is very dynamic and carried well from behind, while she also displayed outstanding shulder freedom and elevation. The mare appeared somewhat tired due to the fact that she was also listed in the auction and had been pulled out many times over the few days in NMS, always expected to show to her best abilities. The female family traces back to the 1958 born St.Pr+E.St. Grenzmaid by Tertzky, a son of Hyperion from Trakehnen. The family originates at the State Stud Neustadt/Dosse, where is it still active today. The State Stud is breeder and owner of Gänseblümchen. The mare family of Grenzmark (O46A) and her daughter Grenzmaid (O46A2) is one of the bigger families of East Germany and has produced a number of outstanding sport horse sires with an emphasis on show jumping and eventing. The famous elite stallion Grossist, the approved S level show jumper Griton, the approved M level dressage stallion Gambler G, the "best Jumper" of the 1999 NMS approvals and now successful Hunter Champin in the US, Graf Lindenau, as well as the influential State Stud stallions Greif, Druse, and Senar I+II all come from this line.

The Reserve Champion Mare was Gestüt Tasdorf's bay Nachtmusik, the Champion of her inspection in Schleswig-Holstein and top priced 2yr old filly in the auction in 2008 (breeder: Dr. Elke Söchtig). Her inspection scores from the summer were 8.5,7.5,7.5/8.5,9.5,8/9 for a total of 58.5 points. Nachtmusik stands in a large frame with good foundation and has an especially powerful trot, yet lacks somewhat the elegance and lightness of the Champion mare this year. She is a great sport horse model though and hopefully will find her way into competition. Sire EH Tambour is a popular stallion in the Trakehner breed and is a full brother to the M level successful dressage stallion Thalys. Through her dam Nadja, Nachtmusik comes from an original Polish mare family that was introduced into the herd at Gestüt Birkhausen in the 1970s. The line is best known for the FEI dressage stallion EH Napoleon Quatre and the internatioonal Grand Prix dressage gelding Neumünster. Another close relative in this in hand competition was Nachtlicht, the Champion of Hessia, who is shown further down on this page.

The 2nd Reserve Champion mare was Pr.St. Kalla, the Champion mare of the New States/South with scores of 8.5,9,7.5/7.5,9,8/8.5 for a total of 58 points. This very powerful yet athletic and light-footed bay was bred by Sander Gellhaar from Steinau and is owned by Corinna Osinski from Tauche. Kalla was an auction filly in Hannover in 2006. Sire Cadeau was named elite stallion this year in Neumünster based on the quality of his offspring that in accordance with their age have progressed well in dressage. THe Kavallerie family is a smaller line within the Trakehner breed and is represented by the M level show jumper Kurt and the ATA's approved Grand Prix dressage stallion Kreshendo.

The best Anglo Trakehner mare of the year was the radiant chestnut Donaublüte, bred and owned by Burkhard Wahler from Klosterhof Medingen. The mare was the Champion and Best Anglo Trakehner of the inspections in Lower Saxony and scored 9,8,7/7.5,9,8/8.5 for a total of 57 points. Donaublüte is a charming model of a modern Trakehner mare that could have more favorable neck in length and shape, but is a very effective mover with very good engagement of her hind quarters and overall, resembles the athletic type we seek iin the breed. Her sire Lauries Crusador xx is the best TB in dressage breeding in many years and has an exceptional record in the Hanoverian breed. Introduced late into the Trakehner population, he has three approved sons and one approved grand son, and can only be judged as a positive influence for our breed. Donaublüte's dam line is a formidable sport horse line in the breed. From very close maternal relation, we see the international show jumper and approved stallion Donaumonarch, the S level show jumper Donau Prints as well as the actively competing dressage stallions Donaukaiser, Donaugold and Donauzauber. The larger Donna family from the Main Stud Trakehnen also stands for the S level dressage stallion Donaudichter, the excellent producer Donauwalzer, the ATA's Donauschimmer, the Grand Prix gelding Dernier Cri, the M level show jumper Donaufeuer, the very important stallion Diamant and of course, legendary Donauwind *E*.
