The Trakehner Influence in Hanover
A brief history of the Hanoverian warmblood horse
The reason why Trakehner horses and their East Prussian counterparts were entered into almost all other European-based warmblood breeds is probably its background, and time of its rise to stardom when mostly all other "warmblood" breeds didn't even exist. Regarding its history, the breed originated in northern Germany in the state of Lower Saxony, the former kingdom of Hannover. This region was always marked by a flourishing horse-breeding industry, which has existed for 400 years. The State Stud was established at Celle in 1735, and the Hanoverian Studbook was officially begun in 1888.

Right after the Second World War, three Trakehner sires quickly rose to stardome in Hanover, with a long-lasting effect even today! Their names? Abglanz, Semper Idem and Lateran. Ironically, the success of the three Celle State Stud stallions in Hanover went almost unnoticed by Trakehner breeders, mostly due to the circumstances of finding a life first, and then dealing with horse breeding. Abglanz' influence in Hanover was the most lasting one, and what he established back in the 50's is today referred to as "the Abglanz type". And indeed, his features, especially his harmonic top line, facial expression of nobility and intelligence with a big eye, as well as the radiant chestnut color can be seen even today, in horses 6 and more generations down from his influence. Like Trakehnen's famous Flügel, Abglanz imprinted his features upon his get. His most famous and successful son was clearly Hanover's big Absatz, who managed to put the line into the spotlight for generations to come. Like no other Hanoverian line, the "A" stands for versatility in dressage and show jumping at the international levels, all the way to World Championships and Olymic Games. |
The list of approved stallion from this line seems endless, and we will limit ourselves to the top names to highlight this stallion line: Argentan I+II , Argentinus, Akzent II, Alabaster, Admiral, Abhang I-III, Absurd, Akrobat, Archimedes, Artwig, Aktuell, Andiamo, Allegro, Arsenik, Aderlass, and many more.

Numerous sporthorses to the highest international levels rose from this line, and include the World Cup winner Anka and Isabelle Werth's outstanding late Amaretto.
While the influence through the A line is very strong on the sire side, there is also the undeniable value coming from many exceptional brood mares that belong to this line. Without Abglanz, there would be no Weltmeyer, without a doubt Hanover's most prominent stallion for the past 15 years. Weltmeyer's dam Anka was by Absatz, and he further carries the blood of Semper Idem through his sire World Cup I.
