The Trakehner Influence in Hanover

Foundation lines: Semper Idem and Lateran

The reason why Trakehner horses and their East Prussian counterparts were entered into almost all other European-based warmblood breeds is probably its background, and time of its rise to stardom when mostly all other "warmblood" breeds didn't even exist.

Semper Idem on the other hand stood back a bit, but managed to establish a stallion line that has recently moved back into the spotlight with Hanover's exceptional show jumper star Stakkato and the Olympic Gold medalist in dressage, Salinero. Semper Idem was equally successful in producing a number of high quality brood mares and his influence on competition, as well as breeding, is stong today. His most noteworthy son was Senator, who founded a strong stallion line with many excellent sons, such as Saturn, Semper, Senatus, Sender, Sermom I+II, Sesam I-III, and Sinus.

Lateran by Helikon out of Latona by Fetysz ox. His sons, like Lachs, Lasso, Laterit, Latino, or Lavendel were not able to keep the line alive in the same extend, as the A- and S-line stallions were, but Lateran is a name many sportriders and knowledgeable breeders like to see in the back generations of pedigrees, because is stands for Arabian influence, stamina, athleticism and soundness. In the Trakehner breed, his influence was very small, but he sired the important mares Blitzmädel, Glockenspiel (dam of Glockenklang), Waldluft (dam of Wildfeuer), and Zauberlied, who is the foundation mare of an entire family of "Zauber"horses, e.g. the DLG and Devon champion stallion Zauberklang and at least 4 FEI open show jumpers. Probably most significant was his Trakehner daughter Gundel, who is the foundation mare for the famous Gundula family of the Poll family, with stallions like Guter Stern, Guter Planet, Ginster or most recently, the World Champion Grafenstolz TSF. In Hanover, it were mares like Landmädel, who put the line into focus. Her Pregel/Trak daughter Preislied produced the much admired full brothers Admiral I+II.

Ironically, the influence of these two exceptional sport horse sires in the Trakehner breed is marginal at best. Older foundation mares like Herbstlicht, Isis, Tara, or Wachau (all daughters of Semper Idem) and Blitzmädel, Gundel, or Zauberlied (all daughters of Lateran) proved to be among the breed's best and established sport horse lines such as the Guter Planet/Guter Stern line for Hörem or the Zauber-family with offspring competing in advanced dressage and show jumping (Zauberklang comes to mind...). However, it was probably the famous "at the wrong place at the wrong time" that prevented these stallions of getting more attention. On top of that, they did not necessarily reflect what was "en vogue" in the Trakehner breed at that time, and sadly got marginal chances. Abglanz is probably the one of the three with the most influence, but even his contribution was way too small considering what he did for Hanover. The only direct stallionn line in the Trakehner breed that traces back to Abglanz and that is still active today is the exceptionally successful Kassio-line, through son Waldzauber and the descending Arsenal - Camelot - Gipy King - Manrico (an Inter I stallion) and the other Gipsy King son, United Kingdom, a young, but highly promising premium stallion from the approvals in Neumünster 2004. Gipsy King's full sister Gipsy Lady is also dam of the much acclaimed Birkenhof's Grafenstolz TSF, the 2004 Bundeschampion and FEI World Champion in Eventing.
