Trakehner blood at the 2012 P.S.I. Auction

Paul Schockemöhle's and Ulrich Kasselmann's prestigious P.S.I. Auction - one of the premiere auction sites in the world - is over, and quite a few horses carried significant Trakehner bloodlines this year. Catalog No. 1, the very talented High Lane by Hotline (by E.H. Hofrat/Trak.), sold for 440,000 Euro. The gelding was qualified for the 2012 FEI World Championships for Young Dressage Horses and the Bundeschampionat. Belessiano, a gelding by Belissimo M out of a E.H. Hohenstein/Trak. daughter, sold for 60,000 Euro. Also qualified for the 2012 Bundeschampionat, High Five, a chestnut gelding by Hochadel (by E.H. Hohenstein/Trak.), sold for 250,000 Euro. The approved and performance tested stallion Sir Kinley (by Sir Donnerhall I) came out of a full Trakehner dam, Dallas von der Heide by K2 - E.H. Partout and sold for 370,000 Euro.

Happy Birthday, Kostolany!

The great dressage sire Kostolany celebrates his 28th birthday today! Born at Gestüt Hämelschenburg (by Enrico Caruso *Ps*E* o/o Kapstadt by Falke), the black stallion was Champion in Neumünster as a 2yr old, competed up to Prix St. Georges during his active sport career and is the sire of several very influential dressage stallions. Best known are his sons E.H. Gribaldi and Silvermoon for their numerous internationally successful offspring. Kostolany is still in excellent shape, still breeding at his home stud, and remains the center of the Langels' family breeding operation in Germany. Happy Birthday Kostolany, and may many more follow!!

Two Trakehner stallions gone: Hadrian and Polarzauber TSF

Not long until Christmas, and the Trakehner family mourns the passing of two stallions. In Canada, Hadrian passed away at 20yrs of age. He was bred by Judy Yancey and was by Beaute out of the ATA elite mare Helena *E* by Herbststurm - Pregel - Boris, from the family of O185A Harfe (Bartmin Grüntal). Hadrian's maternal half brother Harper was a successful FEI dressage horse. Among the offspring of Hadrian are performance horses in eventing, dressage and Hunters, including one of the ATA's early Hunter Champions, Hadrian's April. Hadrian himself also competed successfully as a Hunter and was the ATA's HOY Champion Adult Amateur Hunter n 1996, 1997 and 1998. Hadrian enjoyed a very long life in the excellent care of Danette Ball from Abbotsford in British Columbia, Canada. Our condolences go to his family.

As a total shock comes the passing of only 16yr old Polarzauber TSF in Germany. The last living son of the great E.H. Charly Chaplin was a highly successful FEI Small Tour horse and had been stationed at and trained by Dorothee Schneider for many years. The striking bay with the chrome that so much reminded of his famoues sire was bred by the Gerke Family of Uslar, and was out of the Elite mare Polargold by E.H. Tenor - Habicht - Meilenstein. In 2002, Polarzauber TSF was approved based on his outstanding performance record. He qualified for the Bundeschampinoat 4 times (!) and also twice qualified for Germany's prestigious Nürnberg Burgpokal - all that under his first trainer, Nicole Kochskämper, while stationed at Klosterhof Medingen. Later, the ride was given to Olympian Dorothee Schneider, who published a heartbreaking in memoriam on her website on Dec 4th: "In the moning hours of Dec 3rd, afer his breakfast and daily paddock time, Polarzauber left us forever. As usual, he was showing off in the indoor while preparing for his daily workout, teasing all other horses, showing everybody who was boss in the hall, when he suddenly collapsed and instantly died (ruptured aorta). The transition from life energy and motivation to a sudden end was so swift - Polarzauber was litterally ripped from life. I have rarely ridden a horse with more willingness to perform that at the same time also preserved a very strong character. Our "polarbear" was so very unique in this way. He knew his tasks better than anybody, and continued to win at Inter I and PSG level with his very own signature lightness and fun. A great character has left is, our polarbear will always be with me. He was a very special friend. Polarbear, I miss you!!". Polarzauber TSF leaves only a handful of offspring, but most of them with success in competition under saddle (up to M level dressage).

Oldenburg Approvals 2012 with Trakehner influence

The Oldenburg Approvals in Vechta saw several stallions approved that carried significant Trakehner blood. No. 39 was a much admired chestnut colt by Desperados out of the purebred Trakehner mare St.Pr.St. Sacre Schwalbe by Manhattan out of St.Pr.+E.St. Sacre Noir by Kostolany - Upan la Jarthe AA, bred by Raimund Vorwerk, Lohne, and presented by Mathieur Beckmann, Wettringen. The dam began her career in the Trakehner population and sadly, is somewhat lost to our breed now. Approved was also No. 45 by Fidertanz out of Miria by E.H. Latimer - Corlando - Kompass/T., bred by Zuchthof Up’n Sande, Bakum and presented by Gestüt Vorwerk, Cappeln. Approved and awarded with a premium title was No 46 by Florencio - Rubinero - E.H. Caprimond, bred by Andrea Warnke, Stuh and presented by BG Klieber und Laak, Meinersen. The third most expensive colt was No. 51 by E.H. Gribaldi out of a dam by De Niro, bred and presented by Maik Kanitzky, Herzberg. This stallion was aquired by the Celle State Stud at the auction and will now be stationed in Hanover, the first Gribaldi son at this State Stud. Another E.H. Gribaldi son was No. 52, fully KWPN on the dam side via Clavecimbel, bred by A. van der Goor, Herpen, NL and presented by Ad Valk Dressage Horses b.v., Gorinchem, NL. More Trakehner blood through the dam side was seen in approved No. 70 by Wilkens out of a daughter of the Danish 3/4 Trakehner Zardin Firfod by E.H. Gribaldi - Schwadroneur, bred by Johan Jepsen, Sommersted, DK and presented by Jens-Peter Aggesen, Sommersted, DK, and No. 71 by Zack out of a Hertug dam, bred by Svend Poulsen, Egtved, DK and presented by Dressurpferde Kathmann KG, Vechta-Holtrup.

At the Oldenburg Hauptprämien Show, where the best young stallions are presented (based on first foal crop and performance record), the purebred Trakehner Millenium (by Easy Game - E.H. Ravel) received the 2nd Reserve title. He was bred by Dr. Bettina Bieschewski from Selent and is owned in partnership by Gestüt Sprehe and the Moritzburg State Stud in East Germany. Millenium was the 2nd Reserve Champion in Neumünster 2011.

Top Eventers Auction in Luhmühlen

At the only dedicated event horse auction in Germany, the Top Eventers Auction in Luhmühlen, several Trakehners and horses with Trakehner background were in the lot. The Hanoverian mare Lilly-Marleen by Lauries Crusador xx - Argentan - E.H. Consul/T. carried Trakehner blood through Abglanz and Consul in her damline, and sold for 28,000 Euro. The impressive bay Bisazza by Grafenstolz TSF out of Blanchette by Suchard, a full sister to the outstanding international show jumper Balisto Z, sold for 22,000 Euro.

Two new premium stallions for the ATA

At the annual ATA Convention, held in Ohio during the last weekend in October, two new stallions were approved for the Trakehner breed in North America. Lea Ann Hansen of Glamorgan Manor Dressage in Doswell, VA, presented her home-bred dark bay Velluto by Schiffon *Ps* out of Pr.St. Viva Vanessa by Ursprung TSF - Wakond - Ibikus. Velluto was announced as one of the best movers in recent ATA history. Also approved, and also with a premium, was the black/bay Ehrentanz by Hirtentanz out of Pr.St. Eiszeit by E.H. Buddenbrock - E.H. Consul - Magnet *E*, bred by Rita Berger of Winsen/Aller in Germany, and owned by Kevin O'Meara of Watertown, WI. Ehrentanz was imported as a youngster, and impressed especially with his outstanding body harmony. Both stallions have full German-bred parents and will now stand at stud in North America. Congratulations to the breeders and owners, and good luck for the future.

A Trakehner for Michael Pollard

US Pan Am Team Gold medalist Michael Pollard of Pollard Eventing in Georgia is the new deignated rider for the Trakehner premium stallion Halimey Go (by Askar AA - Pardon Go, breeder: Gestüt Gorlo, Melle, Germany). The stallion, approved in Germany in 2007, was sold as a future eventing partner at the last Neumünster Auction to a US-based syndicate with the intention to compete the horse internationally. To date, Halimey Go, a 7yr old, placed at the German Bundeschampionat of the Event Horse, won his 70 day test, and has won numerous CIC* competitions in Europe. He is scheduled to arrive in the US later this month. Good luck!!

TSF Karascada M placed at CCI**** Pau/France

Kai-Steffen Meier and his home-bred mare TSF Karascada M (by Heraldik xx - E.H. Anduc - Vollkorn xx) placed 10th at the CCI**** Pau in France on Oct 28th 2012. The duo started with an average dressage, which saw them in the middle of the pack on 43th position - not necessarily the spot you want to sit at in oder to make it into the money. However, Karascada did what everybody knows her for - put in one heck of a fast, clean cross country round, which moved them up 31 slots to 11th before stadium! Congratulations to the Meier family!

Neumünster approvals are over

The Trakehner Verband hosted its annual approvals and auctions the weekend of Oct 19th-21st and has 12 new approved stallion, of which 4 received premium titles. New Champion is Donauruf by E.H. Herzruf, followed by 1st Res Champion Guardian by Imperio, 2nd Res Champion Whizzkid by Syriano and the best Anglo Trakehner colt, Amourano by E.H. Connery. Trakehner Stallion of the year was E.H. Connery by E.H. Buddenbrock.

Top ten place for Gilberto Gold TSF at the World Championships

The 8yr old Trakehner gelding Gilberto Gold TSF (by E.H. latimer - E.H. Anduc) placed on a fantastic 9th place (70 entries) at the World Championships Combined Driving in Lezirias/Portugal. Previously successful as a 4th level dressage horse, the gelding only recently switched disciplines, and combined driver Franz Schiltz from Luxenburg trained the talented gelding up to international performance level rather quickly. And now the new pair finished in the top ten of the World Championships, congratulations!

Tabasco is Trakehner Sporthorse of the Year 2012

Ingrid Klimke's 12yr old gelding Tabasco (by Heraldik xx o/o St.Pr.St. Titania III by Heling) will be named as "Trakehner of the Year" in Neumünster this October. The gelding was bred by Karl-Heinz Schulenburg and is owned in partnership by his rider and breeder. The duo Klimke/"Tabbi" won the CIC*** Wiesbaden, won the CIC***-W in Malmö/SWE and also won the individual Silver medal at the German National Championships in Luhmühlen (***) this summer.

International eventing success

Two Trakehners competing in the UK this summer came home with significant success. William Fox-Pitt and Seacookie TSF (by Helikon xx - Onassis *E*) won the CCI*** Blenheim, and Bettina Hoy and her Lafranco TSF (by Bulrush xx - Karon) placed 10th at the prestigious Burghley CCI**** with a clear cross country run and one of only 4 double clear stadium rounds.

Bundeschampionat 2012

Several Trakehners qualified for the Bundeschampionat this year, and two won medals. The new Reserve Bundeschampion of the German Driving Horse is 4yr old Graf Ibikus (by E.H. Hibiskus - Titelheld), bred by Martin Kessler and driven by Dieter Lauterbach.

A Bronze medal was won by Maybach (by Zigeunerheld xx - Prêt à Porter) in the eventing section. Maybach was bred and is owned by Annakatrin Rabe and was ridden by Luise Swennson-Jähde with a cross country score of 90%. Also placed in the finals of the 6yr old eventing group was Saviola (by Grafenstolz TSF - Abdullah *Pg*E*), bred by Kurt Weschke and ridden by her owner Maja Kozian-Fleck. The pair finished 4th overall after having climbed up the ladder in the qualification rounds. They scored a stunning 94% for their cross country performance. The 6yr old event horses have to run at intermediate level at this show.

In the dressage classes, the approved 6yr old stallion Amadelio (by E.H. Lehndorffs - Lauries Crusador xx), bred by Peter Oellrich and owned by Gestüt Hohenschmark placed 8th in the finals under Olympian Dorothee Schneider.

Trakehner Foal Auction, Hanover 2012 - RESULTS

Please follow this link to see the results of the Foal Auction in Hanover!

Goodbye, Connie Kempter

Today, we learned of the untimely passing of Cornelia "Connie" Kempter (63) of the famous Trakehner Rappenhof Stud, Okanagan, BC, Canada. Connie, a German native from Berlin, spent her entire horse career moving all over the world, and in her wake, usually had some profound influence on the breed of the country she ended up living in. Connie was also an accomplished dressage rider. Her first big move brought her to Australia, where she was able to breed horses on her own land. She was a founding member of the Trakehner Society of Australia. A total of 12 horses (6 stallions and 6 mares) had accompanied her on the trip, and some turned out to be foundation stock for the Trakehner breed: Kassiber (by Ibikus) as Australian Champion Eventer, Polarschnee (by Gazal ShA), Grand Prix show jumper with Olympian Vicky Roycroft and Kämpfer (by Flugsand) as member of the winner state team at Gawler 3-Day Event and Warmblood Champion Horse of the Year Show.

Later, Connie's travels brought her to Canada, where, with her first husband Horst, she founded Rappenhof Trakehner Stud - as the name implies, a stud farm devoted to breeding black Trakehners. And what a success that became! Among her many outstansing foundation mares, one will always have a special place: the ATA elite mare Palma Nigra by Habicht produced 4 approved sons (all by Carino *E*, who was also imported by Connie). In 2001, Horst passed away and the stud moved from a pure breeding operation to a full equestrian center. Later, when Connie met her new partner Steven Watson, the farm relocated to the other end of Canada, British Columbia. Slowly but surely Connie found good new homes for her last horses and was dreaming of and planning her retirement - a final move to yet a new location, Mexico. Now, it only remains a dream. Connie, thank you for everything you have done for the Trakehner horse in the world, and Rest in Peace. Godspeed.

Marbach CIC***, CIC*, CCIP* - Trakehner Fest

A huge number of riders gathered at the formidable Marbach International Horse Trials last weekend, which also grew in popularity due to the fact that Badminton and Chatsworth both had to be cancelled in the prior weeks due to heavy rainfall in the UK. 128 pairs alone came to compete in the CIC* class!

World and European Champion Michael Jung won the CIC*** aboard his long-time partner Sam, a son of the also Trakehner approved Irish TB Stan the Man xx, on his dressage score of 29.5 points (!!). A total of 6 Trakehners finished this class, 3 of them in the ribbons: Ingrid Klimke and Tabasco (by Heraldik xx - Heling) placed 3rd, just 0.2 points behind the 2nd placed Sandra Auffarth. Ingrid and Tabasco only added 2 points to their dressage score and gave a very solid, impressive performance. Kai-Steffen Meier placed his home-bred TSF Karascada M (by Heraldik xx - E.H. Anduc) in 7th position - as usual with a clean cross country and stadium round, and a much better dressage this time. And Ingrid Klimke's second Trakehner, the gelding Parmenides (by Sir Chamberlain - Habicht) finished his first *** on 17th place.

In the CIC*, A division, Andreas Dibowski placed 2nd with Songline (by Summertime - Exlcusiv), followed by Twister (by Tantriko xx - Hallodri) and Julia Kappel on 3rd place. 7th place in this division was taken by Alfred Bierlein and Indurain (by Houston - E.H. Arogno). In another division of this huge class, Ingrid Klimke won with the approved Glenn Grant (by E.H. Buddenbrock - E.H. Consul), and Swiss rider Ralph Brovelli finished in the ribbons on 20th position with Palame (by Guter Planet - Solo xx).

And even in the CCIP*, the one star pony division, Trakehner blood was influential! Leonie Leuwer placed 5th aboard the pony mare Camissa Nera, a daughter of the Trakehner legend E.H. Caprimond.

In memoriam: Houston

A leading Trakehner event horse sire died suddenly and unexpectedly in his pasture: the 1994 born Houston (by Sir Chamberlain out of High Fidelity by Saros xx - E.H. Mackensen) was bred by F. Hollaender from the Netherlands, approved in Neumünster in 1996, and stood at the Stallion station Kretschmer in Warendorf for most of his stallion career. In competition, he was developed as an eventer by Marina Köhncke, who also placed him at the Bundeschampionat of the German Eventer in 1999. Houston was never a highly popular stallion, and stood via live cover most of his career. Yet, he produced a number of outstanding athletes in show jumping in eventing, including the international competitors Indurain, Boo Bandit TSF and Lady You MG. As one of the last descendants of the outstanding Sir Shostakovich xx line, the loss of Houston is a big blow to those breeders that look for performance first. Our condolences go to the Kretschmer family, who stated on their website that they lost a member of the family and still can't come to grips with the big gap that Houston's passing has created.

Bits and pieces from around the world

The Trakehner Verband held its board elections on April 21st, and while there was quite some controversial discussion in the months leading up to the big event, the board was mostly re-elected. Old and new president is Petra Wilm of Gestuet Tasdorf, an accomplished international Grand Prix rider and at the helm of the Verband since 2003. Also re-elected were the East Prussian native Hans-Werner Paul, of Rethwisch and "Mr. Bundesturnier" Jürgen Hanke. Dr. Hans Becker of the Northrhine-Westfalian breeding district and Prof. Gerriet Müller, the financial expert on the team, were both not running again due to age and health reasons. They were replaced by Peter Michael Heinen of the famous Heinen Stud in Issum, the borth place of E.H. Michelangelo, E.H. Monteverdi and Grafenstolz, for example, and the financial rssort is now in the hands of expert Martin Kessler of Friedewald, whose family bred the ATA approved High Knight.

Two Trakehners qualified for the Prize of the Best to be held in Warendorf later this year. This show is Germany's most important Young Rider event and a qualification is a huge merit to win. Paula De Boer and the former NMS Champion Le Rouge by Pret a Porter and Juliette Piotrowski and Dornfelder by E.H. Caprimond will make the trip May 11th-13th. Congratulations and best of luck!

Le Rouge, photo by Stephan Bischoff

The eventing season is under way in Europe and several Trakehners placed well at the CIC*/** in Kreuth. In the CIC**, Ben Leuwer and his gelding Cappuccino TSF (by I-Punkt – Memelruf) placed 7th, followed in the same division by Kai-Steffen Meier and his TSF Karascada M (by Heraldik xx – E.H. Anduc) on a 10th place. Andras Dibowski rode the former NMS Champion Songline (by Summertime – Exclusiv) to a 3rd place in the CIC*. Places 11 and 12 in the same division were also taken by Trakehners: Octave (by E.H. Sixtus – Donaumonrach) was ridden by Katrin Khoddam-Hazrati for Austria, and former NMS stallion candidate Indurain (by Houston – Arogno) was presented by his owner Alfred Bierlein.

And everywhere ... E.H. Gribaldi. At the Horses and Dreams event in Hagen/Germany. Totilas (by E.H. Griabaldi) and Matthias Alexander Rath won the Grand Prix for Freestyle with 83.809%. Second place in that class went to British Laura Bechtolsheimer with Mistral Hojris ( 82.745%), a grandson of the great Trakehner E.H. Michelangelo. Place 4 was won by Danish Sidsel Johansen and Schianto (by E.H. Gribaldi - Schwadroneur), which makes this Danish warmblood 3/4 Trakehner. Their score was 74,149%. In the freestyle, the top 4 riders didn't change their positions. In addition, the E.H. Gribaldi daughter Girasol, ridden by Nadine Capellmann (77.750%) placed 7th and Dutch Lorraine van den Brink rode her KWPN gelding Murdock (bz the Trakehner Balzflug) to 15th position (69.000%). In the small tour, Dorothee Schneider rode the approved Polarzauber TSF (by E.H. Charly Chaplin - E.H. Tenor) to two 6th places in the Prix St. Georg and Inter I classes.

More E.H. Gribaldi in Saumur/FRA. Juliette Piotrowski and Dornfelder (by E.H. Caprimond) placed 2nd in the Young Rider Team test during the CDIO and won the freestyle with 74%. In the Grand Prix for Freestyle in the CDI***, Swedish Michelle Hagman rode the former NMS stallion candidate Rudy's Memory TSF (by E.H. Gribaldi - E.H. Bartholdy) to a 3rd place with over 70%. In the end, Places 1, 3 and 7 in this class were held by offspring of E.H. Gribaldi.

In memoriam: E.H. Angard

A few days ago, news of the passing of E.H. Angard were forwarded via Facebook. he was 24 years old. The black Trakehner son of E.H. Anduc represented one of the most successful dressage lines of the breed (Marduc - Halali) and was a proven FEI competitior himself. He was branded Hessian, but a full Trakehner out of Gundula by Gunnar - Helianthus - Jason ox from the mare family of S84A Istella II (Fischer-Jagdschloß Zwiefalten). His entire career, he stood at Gestüt Jagdschloß Zwiefalten and produced a number of excellent upper level dressage horses and the approved sons Offensiv, Herzfunke, Isgard (France), Galileonidas (ZSAA, ZfdP), Almaz (Hessia), Avancier (Hessia), and Andarc (Hessia). His most famous daughter is the black Grand Prix winner Olivia TSF, a mare of outstanding movement and rideability. Many will remember her stunning farewell performance at the Gala in Neumünster a couple of years ago. As a dam sire, Angard is best known for his grand son Axis TSF, who is potentially heading for the Olympic Games in London 2012. Angard was a dominant producer of the typical Marduc - Anduc trait - excellent movement with an especially active hind end. our thoughts are with his family in Zwiefalten.

E.H. Buddenbrock sold to the US

Aqua Farms of Florida purchased the "Trakehner Stallion of the Year" 2010, E.H. Buddenbrock. This 1994 black E.H. Sixtus son is one of the most influential Trakehner sires of our time, with offspring competing internationally in dressage and eventing, over 10 approved sons in various countries, and numerous daughters in the Trakehner Stud Book worldwide. Buddenbrock was bred by Horst Ebert from Neckarsteinach in South Germany, where his dam, St.Pr., Pr.+E.St. Ballerina still resides today. Buddenbrock came out of Sixtus' first approval crop in Neumünster in 1996 and was approved in a year when the Verband only approved 6 colts in total. Buddenbrock stood at stud for Hubertus Poll in Hörem throughout his entire career up to this point, and competed and placed at the Bundeschampionat of the German Event Horse under Olympian Andreas Dibowski. His performance career was not develope any further as he became one of the most popular stallions in the breed. His first crop of sons included the international Grand Prix dressage horse and NMS Champin stallion E.H. King Arthur as well as the tremendously successful E.H. Connery, who continues this line of stallions at Hörem now. Buddenbrock is the second German elite stallion to be standing in North America (besides E.H. Herzzauber in Canada) and will bring tremendous genetic potential and a highly proven record to the ATA.
